Acne vulgaris is a condition affecting the pilosebaceous unit, primarily seen in the peripubertal age group. It is clinically characterized by the presence of comedones (open and closed), papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts, which often heal with scarring, it often causing significant psychological distress due to its visible nature. While conventional treatments such as topical retinoids, antibiotics, and hormonal therapies are commonly prescribed, they may pose limitations in terms of side effects, recurrence, or resistance. Homoeopathy offers an individualized approach, focusing on treating the patient as a whole and stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This case report presents the successful management of acne vulgaris using the homoeopathic remedy Calcarea picrica, selected on the basis of individual symptomatology and repertorial analysis.
A 16-year-old male presented with persistent papulopustular acne on the face for over two years, unresponsive to conventional topical treatments. His complaints were accompanied by oily skin, painful eruptions, and psychological distress marked by low self-esteem. After detailed case taking and repertorization, Calcarea picrica 200C was prescribed based on the totality of symptoms and the remedy’s known affinity for glandular and skin conditions.
The patient showed marked improvement in the severity and frequency of eruptions within six weeks of initiating treatment. Over a period of three months, complete resolution of active lesions was observed, with significant reduction in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and no new eruptions. The patient also reported a notable improvement in her emotional well-being. No adverse effects or recurrence were noted during a six-month follow-up.
This case highlights the effectiveness of individualized homoeopathic treatment using Calcarea picrica in managing acne vulgaris, particularly in cases resistant to conventional therapy. Further clinical studies are recommended to validate the therapeutic potential of this remedy and to explore its role in broader dermatological conditions. Homoeopathy, when practiced judiciously, can serve as a safe and holistic alternative in the management of chronic skin disorders.
